0x01: What Took So Long?

I know… I’m a little late. The reason is I really just didn’t have time over the last two weeks to make a blog post about my typing progress; it was finals at UTSA and my time was spent doing other things. Now I have gotten some time, and it’s summer break, so I can show you my progress and where I am because, although I’ve been busy, I have still been typing.

0x02: Overview

At first progress was slow, very slow, and I was struggling to even do university assignments because how bad my typing was. It was like trying to learn to ride a bike, and at times I thought to myself, is this really worth it? I mean my typing wasen’t bad before so the temptation to just go back to by old ways during those first two to three weeks was something I really struggled with, but I committed. Starting at 30 WPM I thought it would take so much longer to get to the position I am at today, but now I am typing at a solid 90 - 100 WPM which was my goal for month 12.

This was completely unexpected for me, but hopefully noticeable through the “My Goals” section of the last blog post. When I created those goals in the last post I viewed learning to touch type as a linear progression, but it’s much more similar to learning a subject rather than something like learning a sport; you start practicing and eventually get the hang of it, at least for me it just clicked after a few weeks. That being said, it wasen’t instant, much of my progress was locked at 70 - 80 WPM but after watching some YouTube videos, which I linked at the bottom, I was able to get it all the way up to the 90 - 100 WPM range.

0x03: What Now?

So, because I have already reached my 12-month goal I won’t be making monthly updates; I want to make another blog post once I get to 120 WPM but I don’t know when that will happen. I also want to make a C application that is like Monkeytype, but you can upload markdown or electronic publication files and just touch-type the books. The application would be very simple, and just record WPM and use system time to calculate improvement over time in a chart. Data storage can be done with CSV files but the idea is it runs locally so an account would not be required, but I don’t know all the details yet.

0x04: Plan for Achievement

I’m going to keep learning touch typing, my capitalization, numbers, and special characters still need a lot of improvement, so going forward these will be my primary focuses. I liked EdClub.com’s lessons better than Typing.com’s and I just changed a Keybr.com setting so it displays code segments rather than random words.

0x05: Progress

I went from averaging around 15 to 30 WPM to now averaging around 90 to 100 WPM, and around 96% accuracy. progress-two words-per-minute-one

Note: monkeytype does not display attempts from Apr 2nd - Apr 22nd, and I couldn’t figure out why.
